The Artist & The Statement

Hey all, I am Jay a creative writing, and textile art graduate turned webcomic artist, and painter.

I have lived in in four different countries for some amount of time, but am currently based in the midwestern United States.

I am a queer artist, author and occasional witch. A combination creates the perfect trifecta for insanity or devilry. If you believe in such nonsense. ;)

At the moment I work a full time job and share narrative moments in my spare time) I am currently working a full length LGBTQA+ story comic titled, 'Amber City Blues.' I also spend a good amount of time created brightly colored abstract paintings or narrative moments as I like to think of them.

Thanks for stopping by, I hope you enjoyed your stay. All support is appreciated and welcome!

A cartoon verson of myself.

I strongly believe that art should be accessible to everyone in form and concept. Color, texture, and abstraction are a universal language that speak to the senses, and emotions. I can only perceive the stories they tell through my own lenses and filters, what I see and feel myself is never the entirety of my painting's existence. They live anew through the different lenses and fitlers of each viewer.

Each of my paintings is born from a spark: a thought, an idea, or an experiment. They do not come to me fully formed but through a discourse with the painting as I shape the idea that sparked it. I almost never see the end from the beginning - I cannot visualize things inside my head, my thoughts are words and ideas.

I see only a beginning. A concept. A starting point. A painting may start with a texture, a color combination, a tool, an object, a transition, or a contrast. Each piece is crafted from a million decisions, experiments, moments of elation or despair, and sparks of playfulness or apathy. What happens if I try to create a gradient with orange and blue? What effect will I get if I apply the paste with this tool? What will happen if I add a transparent layer of brown over neon pink? Millions of decisions and layers come before the final version of the artwork.

Beneath the veneer of 'finished' are numerous other almost paintings. Artwork that didn't quite have the right feel, say the right words, or capture the sense of story that I sought in its textures, colors, and shapes. Each painting starts on canvas enhanced with base textures from other fabrics and even rocks and sticks, but the story is told by the rough, smooth, cracked, and/or lumpy layers of texture and paint. Each of these interactions plays a part in the totality I see and feel in every story they tell.
